A new study from Canada has shown that a combination of antibiotics like Doxycycline and penicillin could significantly improve a person’s ability to have unprotected sex and to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
“The findings from this study show that Doxycycline is effective for many patients,” said lead study author Dr. Michael J. Trenca, a U. S. medical student and professor at University of Toronto. “These findings have significant implications for the future of the treatment of bacterial STIs.”
Doxycycline is the antibiotic most commonly prescribed to treat sexually transmitted infections. In Canada, it’s sold under the brand names Cipro and Eryc.
Researchers at the University of Toronto’s School of Pharmacy in Toronto are studying the effect of Doxycycline and penicillin combination on a person’s ability to have unprotected sex.
They found that people who took the combination for six months, compared to the group taking the pills for a year, had a significantly higher number of unprotected sex encounters than the other group.
“This is the first time that these studies have shown that a combination of these medications is effective for people with HIV,” said Trenca.
“We’ve seen a very high success rate with Doxycycline, but with a combination of antibiotics, we’ve seen a much lower success rate,” he said.
The study, published in the journalJAMAhas found that Doxycycline and penicillin combination was significantly more effective than Cipro and Eryc.
“It’s important that we have a clear understanding of the potential side effects of taking these medications,” Trenca said. “This may lead to more informed decisions about where we can use these antibiotics.”
Trenca said other antibiotics like amoxicillin and penicillin may also work better for people with HIV and other STIs.
“We have a lot of patients with HIV who take these medications,” he said. “There are other antibiotics that are better for patients with HIV.”
Trenca said the findings are not necessarily a positive one.
“We don’t know how well these medications would work, and it’s not clear yet if the combination of antibiotics and antibiotics could be effective,” he said.
Doxycycline is available by prescription in Canada. Doxycycline is also sold under the brand names Trenzyme and Doxycycline. The generic version of doxycycline is called Trenzyme.
